May 20, 2021 - Vyshyvanka Day: how Ukrainians celebrated in different countries

Vyshyvanka is a real symbol that warms the heart of every Ukrainian. Charms, ancient folk motifs are hidden in its patterns. Vyshyvankas impress with their beauty, even well-known designers and world celebrities cannot pass by them. The history of Ukrainian embroidery is about a thousand years old.

Ukrainians wore it as everyday clothing, but it always had a "coded" sacred meaning. For example, an embroidery ornament could protect against evil eyes, failures or diseases. Mothers embroidered shirts for children with prayers in mind, girls - as a dowry.

In order to preserve these national values, popularize them among the youth and pass them on to the next generations, Ukrainians celebrate Vyshyvanka Day every year on the third Thursday of May. On this day, it is customary to wear national clothes, wherever you have to go - to work, to a meeting or for a walk.

The holiday was founded in Chernivtsi in 2006. The initiator is Lesya Voronyuk, she proposed holding the "World Embroidery Day" campaign. She was supported by other students and showed up for training in Ukrainian traditional clothes. Later, the holiday became all-Ukrainian. On this day, people dress in embroidered clothes, thematic classes are held in schools and educational institutions, and communities abroad organize many interesting events.

In recent years, events on the occasion of Vyshyvanka Day took place in more than 70 countries of the world. In 2021, even despite the quarantine restrictions, Ukrainians around the world celebrated Vyshyvanka Day.
